Tuesday, Sept, 2, 12 noon - 2 PM, Grace Presbyterian Church, 6025 NE Prescott St
Eastside democratic Club meeting (Monthly) Public is invited
Pro and Con on Measure 92 (Labeling GMOs) and Measure 90 (Open Primary)
Oregon voters will consider in November 2014, among others, these two ballot measures,
Measure 92 (Labeling GMOs)
Karen Webster, of the Vote No on 92 organization, will argue against the imposition of labeling describing the contents as having or not having genetically modified organisms in the food.
Kevin Glenn, of Oregon Right to Know, will argue in favor of such legislation.
Measure 90 (Top Two aka Open Primary)
On Measure 90, which replaces partisan primary elections with a single primary from which the top two vote-getters are advanced to the general election, Scott Moore, Communications Director of Our Oregon, will argue against such an arrangement, while a representative of the Oregon Business Council will undertake to display its advantages.
Door open at 11:30. Light refreshments will be available. You are encouraged to bring something to share.

Apologies if some of you are getting this twice. Please forward to all interested parties. The Sierra Club Summit list has been blind copied.
This amendment is to stop the bailout of the USEC uranium plant in Padukah, KY.
Why does Portland care? A contract is being negotiated with Energy Northwest that owns the Nuclear Power Plant at Hanford to buy fuel and prop up this company!
Why is it bad?
Uses old technology that needs Freon to operate:
Thanks to Ed McArdle and Lee Blackburn for these statistics.
Ed McArdle of MI references CFC 114 (Freon) in writeup of Fermi 3, talks about USEC at Paducah using Freon. From USEC’s 2011 Annual Report, bottom of page 11 under Coolant: "The Paducah GDP uses Freon as the primary process coolant. The production of Freon in the United States was terminated in 1995 and Freon is no longer commercially available. We estimate that our current supply of Freon would be sufficient to support at least 10 years of continued operations at current use rates." http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=93662&p=irol-sec&secCat01.1_rs=11&secCat01.1_rc=10. Go to 3/14/2012 for their annual report. (Freon use is grandfathered and govt. has stockpiled it.)
Dr. Helen Caldicott references the use of CFC-114 by the Paducah GDP in 1999, saying it is 9,800 times more destructive than CO2: http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2012/04/paducah-kentucky-nuclear-enrichment.html#!/2012/04/paducah-kentucky-nuclear-enrichment.html and then in an August 14, 2009 post at On Line Opinion, Dr Caldicott states “10,000 to 20,000 times more potent than CO2” http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=9290. "10,000 to 20,000" appears to come from the US EPA's Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), although we are unable to locate the specific document: http://www.epa.gov/tri/
USEC at Paducah has been putting 70% of US CFCs into the air. Statistic from Helen Caldicott.
Also needs coal fire plants to operate: Thanks for Pat Marida- Ohio Sierra Club
Paducah, KY: Nuclear and coal activists are working to shut down USEC gaseous diffusion uranium enrichment plant and coal plants at Shawnee station that supply it with electricity.
In the deal described below, DOE will give USEC depleted uranium (DUF6) tails to re-enrich at Paducah. These tails sit in cylinders at Paducak and Piketon and are in reality less than worthless, they are a liability. Less than 0.3% U-235 is in the DUF6 tails, need to enrich to 3 to 5%. Clearly this will take more energy to re-enrich the tails than the amount of energy that can be derived from the resulting enriched uranium! The Paducah diffusion process takes 20 times as much power as the newer centrifuge technology.
Energy Northwest connection—any uranium from DUF6 cylinders that USEC enriches to reactor grade by law can only be used in federal reactors, there are 6 at TVA, plus Columbia (formerly Bonneville) at the Hanford, WA site. Energy NW is a public entity that controls a federally-operated nuclear power plant, which was once part of WPPS, Washington Public Power Service. Energy NW will put up money now, to buy future enriched uranium from USEC at Paducah, and will sell to TVA at a later date, since TVA is broke and cannot afford to purchase it now.
NRC just oversees. DOE controls and stockpiles nuclear weapons, so it would appear that they are willing to do anything to keep USEC going for military reasons. In spite of the fact that the DOE/military seems to be behind this, we need far better explanation of the national security—domestic source—necessity that our legislators are espousing.
