50th Anniversary March on Washington

Chris Lowe shared Kate Lore's photo.
Yesterday's march in Portland honoring the 50th anniversary of the great March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963 that helped crystallize overall national opinion on the side of the Civil Rights Movement. I was there yesterday, carrying a banner for Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, and honoring in my mind and heart my father's participation in the 1963 march and my parents' civil rights activism in the Boston area, which certainly needed it too.

Photo by Rev. Kate Lore of First Unitarian Church in Portland and member of Albina Ministerial Alliance Coalition for Justice and Police Reform, which initiated the Portland event, Kate was also one of the organizers.

I Have A Dream

On August 24th peace and anti-war activist are gathering in DC to remember the historic March on Washington 50 years ago and to give voice to calls to end the plague of war, the injustice of economic, racial and social inequality and the destruction of our planet. Let us join with thousands of other civil and human rights activists and concerned citizens to bring to life in today’s context the dream King articulated and the movement he fostered fought so very hard to achieve.

United for Peace and Justice is organizing to have a contingent in the Saturday march. Here is a basic outline of events and activities for the week of the commemoration. More details to follow.

If you are organizing or planning to attend the march let us know. info.ufpj@gmail.com.

Our World, His Dream:
Freedom – Make It Happen

is the unifying theme for the five-day commemoration of the I Have A Dream speech. Endorsed and supported by the 50th Anniversary Coalition for Jobs, Justice and Freedom, this theme is undergirded by the three sub-themes: “Freedom to Prosper in Life,” Freedom to Peacefully Co-Exist,” and “Freedom to Participate in Government.”
